My Makeup Design Process is often organized and dependent on what stage of production I happen to be in…

  • This is the stage where I let my imagination go wild. Keeping the script and story in mind ALWAYS - I often start my brainstorming with one of my favorite things: a Pinterest board. These become increasingly detailed throughout pre-production as I make sections for each character.

During this stage is also when I make an electronic form for the actors to fill out. This form give me important information about what designs will work best for both the story and the performers. If you are interested in seeing what one of these forms look like, click here or scroll down.

  • This phase looks the most different depending on what show I am designing for. I create my designs through a slide presentation that goes per character, often including face charts and reference photos. If you are interested in seeing examples of this, click here or scroll down. I share these slides with the director and other designers, before getting notes and adjusting if needed. After approval, I share the presentation with the cast/crew and address any concerns that may come up.

If it is a show with wigs that need styling/dying/altering, this is when that happens. I have also had to film and edit tutorial videos for the performers and technicians to reference during the tech/performance process.
